Do not measure love by spontaneity
Limited availability is not automatically limited interest. Parents may need notice, backup care and energy that a child-free schedule does not require.
At the same time, genuine interest still creates effort. Busy is a context, not a permanent exemption from planning.
Clarify your role slowly
You are dating the parent before you become part of the children’s lives. Let introductions and involvement develop at a pace centered on stability.
Avoid competing with the children for proof that you matter. Adult partnership and parenting are different kinds of priority.
Build dependable rituals
A regular call, planned lunch or protected evening can create security when spontaneity is rare. Consistency often matters more than grand gestures.
Ask whether this structure works for you honestly. Compatibility includes lifestyle, not just chemistry.

Put it into practice
Talk early about what happens when plans change. A sick child may require cancellation; repeated last-minute vagueness may still be avoidable. Agree on how much notice is realistic and how you will reconnect afterward. The distinction matters: flexibility means adapting to genuine parenting demands, while neglect means one person consistently absorbs every disruption without reassurance, rescheduling or consideration.
