It can be disorienting to watch your partner become lively, generous and attentive with guests, then withdraw when the door closes. The contrast may leave you wondering whether the relationship matters less than everyone else. Before assigning a motive, describe the pattern accurately.

Social energy and intimate availability are different skills, but the difference still deserves a conversation.

Choose a neutral moment

Do not raise the issue while guests are leaving or during the first silent minutes afterward. Pick a time when neither person is performing or recovering.

Use one recent example instead of a global accusation.

Describe the contrast

Try: “At dinner you were engaged, and afterward I felt shut out when my questions received one-word answers.”

Specific observation gives the other person a chance to explain fatigue, habit or avoidance.

Ask for a small form of reconnection

Request ten minutes together after social events, a check-in the next morning or a shared task.

A concrete request reveals whether your partner is willing to meet the need.

Watch for contempt

Needing quiet is valid. Mocking you for wanting connection, denying an obvious pattern or using charm to recruit outsiders against you is different.

A relationship should not require an audience before kindness becomes available.
