When One Partner Carries All the Invisible Household Work
Invisible planning, remembering, and anticipating can exhaust one partner even when visible chores appear evenly divided.

A household may look equal because both people cook, clean, or earn income. Yet one person may also remember birthdays, schedule appointments, notice supplies, organize childcare, track repairs, and remind everyone what needs to happen. That mental load is work even when it leaves no obvious pile on the floor.
Make the invisible list visible
Write every recurring task, including planning and follow-up. “Handles school” includes messages, forms, supplies, schedules, and emotional preparation—not only driving.
Transfer ownership, not assistance
If one partner must assign, remind, and supervise, they still manage the task. Full ownership means noticing and completing it without being directed.
Divide by capacity and preference
Fairness may change during illness, busy seasons, or caregiving. Revisit the plan instead of treating one arrangement as permanent.
Stop praising basic participation as rescue
Both adults live in the home. Shared responsibility is not a favor one performs for the naturally responsible partner.
