A standard tarot deck contains 78 cards divided into the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana. The two groups are not ranked by importance so much as scale. Major cards tend to frame larger themes and turning points; Minor cards describe the situations, choices and behaviors through which those themes unfold.

The Major Arcana

The 22 Major Arcana run from the Fool through the World. Their archetypes include creation, authority, surrender, transformation, balance and completion. When several appear in a spread, the reading may concern a significant developmental period or decision.

A Major card does not guarantee a dramatic event. It can show the deeper lesson underneath an ordinary situation—for example, Justice may highlight accountability within a routine workplace dispute.

The Minor Arcana

The 56 Minor cards include four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. Each has cards Ace through Ten plus four court cards. They commonly address motivation, emotion, thought, conflict, work, money and physical life.

Minor cards often answer the practical “how.” They may show the conversation, habit, resource or obstacle that shapes the larger theme.

Reading them together

Start with the Major card as the headline and use nearby Minor cards as detail. The Hermit with the Four of Swords may emphasize restorative solitude; the Hermit with the Three of Pentacles may suggest seeking specialized guidance.

Context and position still matter. No card group overrides the question, spread structure or reader’s responsibility to avoid absolute predictions.

A practical next step

When reviewing a spread, circle the Major cards and summarize their shared theme in one sentence. Then let the Minor cards identify the real-world actions, emotions and decisions connected with that theme.
