Tarot court cards are often the most confusing cards in a spread. Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings can describe actual people, but they may also point to a role, level of maturity, communication style or energy the situation requires. Reading them only as literal individuals can make an otherwise clear spread unnecessarily narrow.

The four ranks

Pages are learners, messengers and beginnings. They often show curiosity, news or an energy that is sincere but not yet experienced. Knights put energy into motion; they pursue, react and test what the suit wants to accomplish.

Queens tend to embody the inner mastery of a suit: emotional capacity, understanding and sustained presence. Kings often show outward direction, responsibility and the ability to use the suit’s qualities in the world. These are functions, not fixed genders.

Add the suit

Wands bring fire, initiative and creative drive. Cups concern emotion, relationship and imagination. Swords emphasize thought, truth, communication and conflict. Pentacles relate to work, resources, the body and practical stability.

A Knight of Wands may rush toward excitement, while a Knight of Pentacles advances slowly and reliably. The rank shows how energy moves; the suit shows the area and element through which it operates.

Person or pattern?

Look at the question and surrounding cards. In a relationship reading, a court card beside identifying or social cards may indicate a person. Near cards of growth or decision, it may describe how the client is being asked to respond.

Avoid forcing physical descriptions based on outdated correspondences. Personality, role and behavior are usually more useful than assigning hair color, age or gender.

A grounded next step

When a court card appears, ask three questions: Who might this describe? What stage of development does the rank suggest? How does the suit behave here? The answer that fits the spread most naturally is usually stronger than the most dramatic interpretation.
