Read Tarot Pip Cards by Laying the Suit Out in Order
Use a suit sequence to read tarot pips by number, arrangement and changes in the image, especially in decks without illustrated scenes.

Tarot pip cards become easier to read when you see one as part of a suit. Choose a deck with numbered cards that use repeated suit symbols instead of detailed scenes. Lay one suit from ace through ten, with the court cards set aside for this exercise. Watch what happens to the spacing, shape and balance as the count rises. You now have a small visual vocabulary that belongs to the deck in front of you.
Describe the card before assigning a meaning
Start with the middle of the row. Is the pattern open or crowded? Do the objects make a frame around an empty center? Are there colors or leaves that show up at particular points? Write one sentence about the arrangement without using any meaning you memorized. The sentence might be as plain as, “The middle symbol holds two groups apart.” A particular deck may draw five objects in an arrangement that suggests balance; another may make the same count look restless.
Slide the neighboring cards closer and read what changes from one to the next. If the fourth card is symmetrical and the fifth introduces an object in the center, the fifth might suggest an interruption or something that joins the two sides. Try both possibilities against the question and the surrounding cards. The count helps orient the reading, but it does not force the picture into a single meaning.
Bring one observation into a spread
Shuffle and draw a card for a small reflective question, such as what deserves attention in a project. If it’s a pip, place it back between its neighbors for a moment. Choose the visual change that helps you describe it. Then return the card to its spread position and see whether that description still makes sense there. If it doesn’t, keep the plain observation and try a different interpretation.
Try the same method with a second suit another day. Comparing the same number across two suits shows what belongs to the number and what the artist does with each kind of object. Over time you can consult a guidebook with a specific observation in hand, instead of asking the book to supply the only possible meaning.
